_The Department of Geology was established in the year 1965 at Undergraduate level. Later owing to attained richness of expertise and collected resources/ materials, post-graduate course was added to the department in the year 2005. The UG course is approved as a government aided course while PG course was started under self finance category.

_On advent of our Mission's own Shri Guru Ram Rai University, in the year 2017, all the self finance courses of this institution affiliated to HNB Garhwal Central University were shifted to that university by our Management. The Department is currently offering six semester UG course under choice based credit system (CBCS). Earlier special papers like Sedimentology and Petroleum Geology were taught at Post-graduate level. The department is a recognized research centre for various universities offering Ph.D. course.

_The Department has a strong research base and the faculty members have been actively engaged in research and field work in the diverse aspects of Himalayan Geology as well as other parts of India. Major thrust areas for the research in the Department are Palaeontology (vertebrate, invertebrate & micropalaeontology), Landslides in Uttarakhand Himalaya, Natural Hazards & their Mitigation.

_The Department has established laboratories with latest equipments. The Department has a Computer lab with GIS and Rolta Geomatica software set up. Besides some other sophisticated equipments like GPS, Stereo Zoom Paleontological and High Magnification Petrological Polorising microscopes have also been added in the department.

_Faculty members of the department have published research papers in journals of repute and have participated in Several Seminars/Workshops/Conferences/Short Term Courses/Training/Talks etc, besides organizing a few. The faculty of the Department is actively associated with Institution's NCC Sub-Unit , Students Union Elections & other organisational administrative assignments.

_The department has established linkages with Wadia institute of Himalayan Geology, ONGC & GSI for the benefit of its students, to get hands on training. Department is approved by ONGC, Dehradun, for their paleontological sample sorting work. Alumni of the department are versatile, engaged in various fields, besides being well placed in several organizations of repute.
